Lighten by 2Pens Media Inc. · Effective September 3, 2026 · Updated September 29, 2026

Summary

Lighten stores the family notes, tasks, events and lists you enter so that they can be shared with the household members you invite. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not use your content to train AI models.

What we collect

  • Anonymous account identifier. When you first open Lighten we create an anonymous account (a random ID) with Firebase Authentication so your data can sync between your devices and your household. No email, phone number or password is required.
  • Content you enter. Your display name, household name, the names of people you add (for example your children), the notes you type or dictate, and the tasks, events, reminders and lists Lighten creates from them.
  • Device information. Platform (iOS or Android) and app version, used for troubleshooting.
  • Usage and crash data. Which screens and features are used (for example that items were added or that the subscription screen was shown), device model and app version, and crash reports. We use Google Analytics for Firebase and Firebase Crashlytics for this. It does not include the text you type and is never used for advertising.
  • Answers you choose to give. If you cancel Lighten Plus, the app may ask one optional question about why. Your answer and any note you add are stored with your household so we can improve Lighten.

We do not collect precise location, contacts, health data or advertising identifiers. Photos are only read when you choose to add one (see “Photos” below) and are never stored.

How we use it

  • To store and sync your household's plan between the members of your household in real time.
  • To turn the text you enter into structured items. The text of each note, together with today's date and the names of the people and members in your household, is sent to Google's Gemini model through Firebase AI Logic for processing. Google processes this data under its Firebase data processing terms and does not use it to train models.
  • To turn a photo you choose into structured items. When you tap the camera button and take or pick a photo (for example a school flyer, a schedule or a list), a reduced copy of that one photo is sent to the same Gemini model, under the same terms, to read its text. The photo is not saved by Lighten, not stored in your household and not kept on our servers.
  • To schedule reminders on your device. Notifications are generated locally on your phone.

Voice dictation

If you use the microphone button, speech is transcribed by your device's built-in speech recognition (Apple Speech on iOS, Google speech services on Android) under those providers' terms. Lighten receives only the resulting text.

Photos

Lighten only sees a photo when you add one with the camera button. Choosing from your library uses the system photo picker, so Lighten can only see the photo you select, never your whole library. Taking a photo asks for camera permission once. The photo is sent for reading and then discarded; only the items you choose to add are saved.

Notifications and calendar link

If you allow notifications, your device gives Lighten a push token. We store it with your time zone so our server can tell you when another household member adds plans and send a Sunday "week ahead" summary. You can turn either off in the Family tab. If you add Lighten to your calendar, your calendar app downloads your household's dated plans from a private link. Anyone who has that link can see those plans, so share it only with family. You can reset the link at any time in the Family tab, and the old link stops working right away.

Where data is stored

Data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore (Firebase) in the United States. Access is restricted by security rules so that only signed-in members of a household can read or write that household's data.

Our website

lightenfamily.com uses Google Analytics to count visits and taps on the download buttons, so we can see which links bring families to Lighten. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland it runs without analytics cookies. We do not use advertising cookies.

Sharing

Your household's content is visible to every member who joins with your invite code. Keep your invite code private. We do not share your data with third parties except the service providers above (Google Firebase and Google Analytics), and we never sell it.

Children

Lighten is intended for parents and adults. You may enter your children's first names to organize their activities; we do not knowingly collect information directly from children under 13.

Retention and deletion

Your data is kept while your household exists. You can delete any item in the app. To delete your account and all household data, email support@lightenfamily.com from within the app's Family tab and we will remove it within 30 days.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your data. Contact us at the address below and we will help.

Changes

We will post any changes to this page and update the effective date.
