A shared family calendar for iPhone and Android that fills itself in
Most shared family calendars break in one of two places. Either one parent has an iPhone and the other has Android, so the calendar only really works for one of you. Or the calendar is shared, but only one person ever types anything into it, and it quietly becomes that person’s job again.
Lighten is built to fix both. It is a shared family calendar and organizer that runs natively on iPhone and Android, and you fill it by saying a sentence instead of typing out events.
What a shared family calendar needs to do
- Work on both phones. Mixed iPhone and Android households are common, and the calendar has to be first-class on both.
- Update instantly for everyone. If one parent moves the dentist, the other should see it before they leave work.
- Be quick to add to. If adding an event takes a minute, only the most organized parent will do it.
- Hold the prep, not just the event. A party is on the calendar. The gift, the RSVP and “leave by 1:30” usually are not, and those are what get forgotten.
- Show whose week it is. A shared calendar should make the load visible, not hide it.
How Lighten’s shared calendar works
Say it, and it lands on the right day
Type or say something like “Elesa has a birthday party Saturday at 2, need a gift under $30, we have to leave by 1:30.” Lighten turns it into four dated items: the gift on Friday, a task to add the party address, a reminder to leave at 1:30 and the party itself at 2. You check them on one screen and they are on the calendar.
Week, Month and Year views
The Calendar tab switches between Week, Month and Year. Items are color-coded by kind, so events, tasks, reminders and shopping are easy to tell apart at a glance.
Shows up in Apple Calendar and Google Calendar
In the Family tab, under Stay in the loop, tap Apple Calendar or Google Calendar. Lighten gives your household a private calendar link, and everything you add appears in the calendar you already check, even on days you never open Lighten. Apple Calendar refreshes within about an hour and Google Calendar can take up to a day. Items can also repeat daily, weekly or monthly.
Shared with your partner in real time
Start a household, share the six-character invite code, and your partner joins from their own phone. iPhone and Android stay in sync instantly. No email or password is needed to start.
On your computer, too
There is a web version for when you are at a laptop. It signs in with the same invite code and shows the same calendar and lists.
It shows who is carrying the week
The Family tab shows how many of this week’s items each of you is carrying. If it tilts one way, Balance it suggests a fairer split. More on why that matters in our guide to the invisible load.

What Lighten does not do yet
To be straight about it: Lighten’s calendar link goes one way. Your Lighten items show up in Apple Calendar or Google Calendar, but Lighten does not import events from them, and you edit items in Lighten, not in the other calendar. If your work meetings live in Google Calendar, you would keep that for work and use Lighten for the family side. It also keeps one household per account, so it is not built for sharing with a whole extended family or a sports team.
If two-way calendar sync matters more to you than the rest, a shared Google calendar is a solid free choice. We compare more options in our Cozi alternatives guide.
Set it up in two minutes
- Install Lighten on your phone and tap Start my household.
- Open the Family tab and share the invite code with your partner.
- Your partner installs Lighten and taps I have an invite code.
- Add your kids as people, so items can be assigned to them without their own phone.

Frequently asked
Is there a shared family calendar that works on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Lighten has native apps for iPhone and Android, and a household stays in sync between them instantly. Google Calendar also works on both. Lighten adds the ability to create events, prep tasks and shopping items from one spoken or typed sentence.
Is Lighten’s shared family calendar free?
Yes. The free plan includes unlimited manual items, sharing with your partner, lists and reminders, plus 5 AI brain dumps every 7 days per household. Lighten Plus is $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial, and one subscription unlocks the whole household.
Does Lighten sync with Google Calendar or Apple Calendar?
Lighten sends its items to them. Each household gets a private calendar link you can add to Apple Calendar or Google Calendar, so everything in Lighten shows up there and keeps updating. It works one way: Lighten does not import events from Google Calendar or Apple Calendar.
Can I see the family calendar on my computer?
Yes. Lighten has a web version at lightenfamily.com/app. You sign in with your household’s invite code and see the same calendar and lists.
Do my kids need their own phone?
No. Add them as people in the Family tab and assign items to them. Anyone with a phone can also join the household with the invite code.
